AP and CNBC research is clearly flawed…  I am in NO WAY a fan of Facebook, and do not get into so much social networking via Facebook…  And I think Zuckerberg is just another Silicon Valley Nerd/Thief that stole the idea from others. But I have to be fair, and say that “research” conducted by AP & CNBC, painting Facebook up as a ‘fad’ is in no way fair.
A fad, by definition, is something that will eventually die out… Certainly MySpace was a fad, as it died out quite quickly…. But Facebook has gone way past the ‘fad danger stage’… It’s now got such a solid userbase and history behind it, that it is going to stay a financially valuable social media company for many years to come (and that’s NOT a fad)…
I just wonder, -as Facebook prepares for public float- why CNBC and AP have painted some crappy research results up as Facebook being a fad?  What is their true motive?

Facebook is a fad, say half of people polled
Facebook has more 900 million users as it prepares to launch a new IPO this week. But a fair number of people aren’t too excited about the popular social network.
Half of the 1,000 people polled by the Associated Press and CNBC called Facebook a passing fad. A majority of those surveyed (51 percent) have a favorable impression of the company, while 23 percent have an unfavorable opinion.
But in light of the upcoming IPO, the survey focused more on Facebook’s value as an investment.
Half of those polled believe the initial asking price is too high, while just a third feel the value is appropriate. But those results are based on Facebook’s original asking price.
The company today revised its S-1 Registration Statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission to price its initial public shares between $34 and $38. That’s an increase from the $28 to $35 range that Facebook first announced.
Still, more than half of the people polled said that Facebook would make a good investment, while 17 percent said they’re just not sure how the company will fare after it goes public.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg grabbed mixed results in the poll.
Half of those questioned said they were neutral, don’t know how they feel, or have never even heard of Zuck. More than a third see him in a favorable light, while 14 percent have an unfavorable opinion.
Among active investors, 42 percent have a positive impression of the CEO, while 14 percent are more negative. Zuckerberg’s age and reputation had little impact on the opinion of those polled.
But Zuck’s skills at running a large, publicly-traded company was another matter. Only 18 percent said they have deep confidence in his ability to run a public Facebook, while 40 percent said they’re “somewhat confident.”
As usual, privacy was a hot-button topic.
Only 13 percent of the people polled said they trust Facebook “completely” or “a lot” to keep their personal information private. More than half (59 percent) said they have little or no faith in the company to protect their privacy. And almost a quarter said they don’t even use Facebook because of privacy concerns.
The survey was conducted by phone from May 3 to May 7 and solicited the opinions of 1,004 people.

A church billboard proclaiming that “Jesus Heals Cancer” has breached advertising standards by suggesting the church can offer something other churches cannot, the Advertising Standards Authority has ruled.

Napier’s Equippers Church had a billboard saying “Jesus heals cancer - church but not as you know it.”

It drew a number of complaints including from a mother whose son had cancer.

“As the mother of a three-year-old boy who has spent the past 18 months fighting against leukaemia, I find the above billboard offensive and upsetting,” the complainant, identified only as J Condin, wrote.

“It shows no compassion and understanding to those in our community that have journeyed through cancer and lost loved ones.”

In her initial complaint, Condin said the billboard made her blood boil “and brings back sad memories of those I have lost in my life due to cancer. It is false advertising.”

She said the billboard was dangerous and deceptive as it could potentially offer false hope and lure in the vulnerable in their time of illness and sadness.

“I would be more than happy if this billboard was to read ‘Jesus Heals’ and that way it could be interpreted to mean he heals spiritually/emotionally which I believe is more along the lines of what the church are trying to say.”

Equippers Church told the authority that it was never their intention to create offence, division or contention in the community.

They had already removed the billboard but wanted an Advertising Standard ruling on it.

Their new billboard said “Jesus Heals every Sickness & Every Disease - Matthew 4:23”.

The church said they believed the Bible as the authoritative and reliable source of information and it gave numerous accounts of Jesus healing people.

“Our belief is substantiated by the fact six people within our congregation have testified to Jesus healing them from cancer,” the church said.

The church said religious advertising and freedom of speech were vital components of a free and democratic society.

In its consideration, the standards authority said it had looked a photograph of the billboard which was clearly identifiable as an advertisement for the Equippers Church.

But it said the billboard made its statement as a “strong absolute statement of fact” when it should be stated as a belief of the church.

It breached the advertising code of ethics on that ground.

The authority said it acknowledged the vulnerability and sensitivities of some of the public exposed to the advertisement, but said it was unlikely that people suffering from cancer may forgo conventional medical treatment because of the statement “Jesus Heals Cancer”.

The board said that while the church wanted to offer “a message of hope” its billboard was provocative and would cause offence to people who were dealing with, or knew people who were dealing with, cancer.

The authority said the billboard could cause confusion for some people as it could be interpreted as meaning the Equippers Church was able to offer something that other churches could not.

Shopping in Asia is fun (part 2)… Over five months, I have started to develop a ‘white and metallic’  theme in the room I am staying in.
A corner with a white fan, white iron, cute little whitish ironing board - and a white hairdryer.  The iron and hair dryer happened to come my way; I didn’t buy them myself.
In another corner, are white drawers in a silver rack…  I’ve had these for a couple of years, but my new rack for the Entertainment PC (see other weblog entry) matches nicely…  Even the rubbish bin is metallic!
(even the dirty clothing/washing basket is metallic - it’s not pictured above)…
Finally, there is the Bedstead - with: light, clock, world globe, mirror, silver basket and bookends - all metallic!
I will consider getting a metallic tissue container - when I find one in Taiwan… I mean something like this -http://img0.etsystatic.com/il_fullxfull.266596588.jpgor this -http://www.gd-wholesale.com/userimg/35/1848i1/tissue-box-745.jpg

In the near future will come a new bedspread, quilts, and sheets… But my money is really tight now… It could get better in June…  Time to keep money in reserve…
At the same time, I cannot stress enough how cheap all of this was to do.

In the near future will come a new bedspread, quilts, and sheets… But my money is really tight now… It could get better in June…  Time to keep money in reserve…

At the same time, I cannot stress enough how cheap all of this was to do.

Shopping in Asia is fun (part 1)… Lots of interesting things - and at a cheaper price than the rip-off importers back in my original country.  A few months ago, I got a new silver rack for my ‘Entertainment PC’ (A PC in my bedroom that is just for playing video and audio)…
Today (18 April 12), I got 48 white plastic boxes for my discs/DVDs/movies/documentaries…  The white boxes were only 20nt each!  I was really surprised; I thought they would be at least 35-39nt each, but I was wrong.  They are strong enough to last at least 20 years…
I need to now move all the discs from the older folders (seen laying all over the floor) to the new white plastic ones in the silver rack.  (The older folders will certainly be used/recycled)…
This entertainment PC also has a light behind it, so all the movie watching can be as healthy as possible!  It’s a non-flicker white-light, made by OSRAM.
STATS:  I currently have 380 video discs (DVD/MPG/VCD — etc), there is now ‘new room’ for a total of 1128 (‘total’ meaning including the discs I now have)… To put it another way, I have 48 white plastic boxes, and almost 18 of them are full.
Personally, I will be very happy if I never fill all 48 boxes… I think anyone who has over 1000 discs spends too much of their life in cinema fantasy… Or even too much time watching documentaries!
By the way, all those discs are cataloged; I can find anything very quickly… Just type in a keyword such as ‘Fukushima’ or ‘Olympics’ .. The software I use is called ‘TabePro’ - a cross between Excel and a free-form database… http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/business/files/TablePro.pnghttp://www.filebuzz.com/software_screenshot/full/22113-tablepro.jpg
Sadly, the software is no longer available; the Eastern European developer created an excellent little product, but asked a bit too much money for it, and did not have the ability/resources to market it.  I’m sure it could have been very successful, if he had been able to stick with it - adding new features, templates etc.  Despite its apparent simple interface, the software has really excellent search and report-printing functions (much better than Excel).  Let’s hope my copy of TablePro will keep running until Windows version 20.

Two very unhappy guys!  The Australian Labour Party (ALP) stabs its own leaders in the back, decade after decade.  And when these former leaders finally speak out, they have nothing but bitter things to say about the ALP.  How could anyone trust this Party to run the country?
Well, this is how they have usually gained power:The ALP always tries to win [or keep] power by (1) bribing unethical Union bosses, (2) brainwashing gullible and idealist University students - who are always too young to remember the last terrible time the ALP had power [and always think the grass is greener on the other side] and more recently, (3) the ALP have gone after the new migrant vote - again - people who are gullible, thinking that if there is a change of government, their migrant experience will somehow magically improve.
So when the ALP want power, they go after: * students and migrants(THE MOST gullible voters!) and —- * elitist Unionists and Union supporters (who are almost always lazy, usually -at least- unethical and greedy, if not corrupt! ….. Also, just like the ALP voting students, the Unionists are often ‘ill-informed idealists’ who have this imaginary picture of a perfect past - that never really existed in any history!)
Well, to all of you gullible fools that voted ALP: You got the government you wanted, and now you have been paying a very dear price the past few years…

Here is the Coffee-Tea Tableset I made recently…
YOU CAN CLICK PICTURE FOR CLOSE-UP/BIGGER VIEW!It’s for THREE people (but there are 4 teaspoons anyway!)—- If I ever have a fourth guest, I do have a fourth matching cup…I really like the milk jug - very bling-bling! (and $370ntd from the shop ‘Hola’) … It’s ‘CafeDeTiamo’ brand from Taiwan - and seems as good as any from Europe… In fact, it is probably available in Europe…  I did look for something cheaper, but did not have any success… Plus, when containing milk, it’s best to get good quality steal.  The sugar pot was very cheap ($75ntd) —- I hope it doesn’t rust!  I think it should be okay, as it is ‘Argus’ - a popular brand in Taiwan…  I think it could have been about $200-220ntd originally, but thing to remember: Taiwanese are not coffee drinkers… Like most of Asia, - it’s all tea here.  Coffee has become a LOT more popular with businessmen in the mornings (just before work), but almost all of that is sold by 7-11, McDonald’s and Starbucks.  And if Taiwanese do make any coffee at home or in the office, it’s the pre-mixed (3in1) crap with powdered milk and full of preservatives (as if coffee didn’t have enough chemicals already!) …. In all, there is little market for a sugar pot here in Taiwan - even though they make them here.  I got the sugar pot at a kinda junk/surplus shop…I have a special little pot (at front-left) just to put used teabags into!  It’s from the good quality range/division of ‘Argus’ - but was sold very cheaply at $110ntd to clear stock… You can see a teabag squeezer sitting in it…  I *reallly* don’t think it was made to be a fancy bin for used teabags!  But I have no idea what Taiwanese would do with it…  Maybe it doesn’t have any set purpose; and that maybe why it was also on sale (nobody knows what to do with it, even though it is very attractive)…
As with my Dinner Tableset (pictured elsewhere), I painted the coasters and tray matching colours…
However, the central theme of the Coffee-Tea Tableset is items that are ‘round’ and ‘silver’…
I was very pleased to find the rather shiny gray cups at the shop called ‘Working House’.  Not only does their colour suit the set (No, I would not get silver-steal cups! - Shiny gray looks good enough), but the shape of these cups is suitable for both coffee and tea —- They are like a hybrid cup.

I painted the things the same colour - and got items that match…
One of my Bonsai plants lost all its leaves - and is probably dead… I think I gave it too much water!  (too much love…)
Those material things at the back are placemats - I bought the material and cut it to the size of placemats - then got them overlocked by the local sewing lady.
Those round wooden things are for putting pots and pans on… So, for example, if I make a salad, I’ll put the salad bowl on one of those round things… Ultimately, they protect the tablecloth and table from dirt/scratches.
Also at the back, you can see a sweet/candy jar…  It’s quite a new product from Taiwan plastics company ‘Keyway’ - very ‘bling-bling’ high quality plastic…
At the front is a star-shaped candle… (Ironic, since my romantic life is a foreign concept)…  I could not find a square candle, but I have seen them outside of Taiwan…  The star-shaped one is a bit too much bling-bling for me…
The central theme of the Dinner Tableset is items that are ‘square’ and ‘transparent’…
Most of these square items are taken OFF the tray… Once salads, grilled fish (etc) are served/put on the table protectors (those round wooden things), the following items put IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TABLE are the candle (in square glass), spice bottles (in square glass), bonsai (square glass) — and later, any desired candies/dinner mints are also offered from the square glass-like canister…
Finally —-  just to clarify; - the idea is to be able to re-pack everything back onto the tray to clear the table very quickly, - perhaps making way for the coffee-tea tableset!
I enjoyed doing these two projects (the Coffee-Tea one and the Dinner one)… It was a good way to kill some time between clients while in the city.  In all, items were bought from exactly 11 shops, ranging from junk shops to DIY shops - and even a florist (where I got the dinner tray from)

Most of these square items are taken OFF the tray…
Once salads, grilled fish (etc) are served/put on the table protectors (those round wooden things), the following items put IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TABLE are the candle (in square glass), spice bottles (in square glass), bonsai (square glass) — and later, any desired candies/dinner mints are also offered from the square glass-like canister…
